Miyako Airport and Hirara accommodation are here. Direct bridges lead to Ikema, Kurima and Irabu; continue through Irabu to Shimojishima.
Ikema Island
Cross Ikema Bridge from northern Miyakojima. The bridge may close during typhoons.
Ogami Island
Boats leave from Shimajiri Port, not Hirara Port. Services depend on sea conditions.
Kurima Island
Cross Kurima Bridge from southwestern Miyakojima. Use designated parking, not the bridge or junctions.
Irabu Island
Cross Irabu Bridge from western Miyakojima. Typhoon closures also affect travel to Shimojishima Airport.

Shimojishima Airport is here. Road access from Miyakojima runs through Irabu Island.
Tarama Island
Fly from Miyako Airport or take a boat from Hirara Port. Check the departure port and sailing notices for your date.
Minna Island (Tarama Village)
This is Minna in Tarama Village. Arrange a charter boat from Tarama Island in advance; there is no scheduled ferry for a simple day trip.
Two airports; arrive from Okinawa Main Island by air
There is no scheduled passenger ferry between Naha and Miyakojima. Compare the airports' locations and onward transport as well as the flights.
Miyako Airport — Miyakojima
On Miyakojima itself, with buses, taxis and rental-car connections to Hirara and other areas.
Miyako Shimojishima Airport — Shimoji / Irabu
On Shimojishima, a separate island. Travel to Miyakojima via Irabu Island and Irabu Bridge.
Arrange transport after arrival first
For a rental-car trip across the bridges, check collection and return conditions at the airport and rental office. Without a car, use a base such as Hirara and combine airport buses, local buses, taxis and hotel transfers. Limit the areas you visit according to your arrival time.

Choose fewer destinations and keep arrival and departure days light.
- Focus on Miyakojima and roughly one bridge-linked area.
- Do not overcount sightseeing time when arriving late or departing early.
- Do not force in Ogami, Tarama or Minna; each needs additional travel arrangements.
4 days / 3 nights
Gain another full day and allow room for different areas and changing weather.
- Separate the north, south and Irabu–Shimoji areas onto different days more easily.
- Swap a sea activity for a land-based plan when conditions are unsuitable.
- An extra day still does not mean visiting all eight islands; prioritise by transport requirements.
Check typhoons, sea conditions and bridges separately
A bridge can be closed while flights still operate, and sea swell can remain under clear skies. One piece of information is not enough to decide whether to travel or swim.
- Airlines and boat operators decide their own day's operations. Do not infer cancellations or service from the forecast alone.
- Irabu and Ikema bridges may close during typhoons. Crossing on the way out does not guarantee you can cross back.
- Check wind and waves and wear a life jacket before entering the sea. Avoid swimming alone, after drinking alcohol, or when tired or short of sleep.

Check regional warnings and typhoon information before departure and during your stay. Clear skies do not rule out lingering swell.
Typhoon restrictions on Irabu and Ikema bridges
Both bridges may close during a typhoon. Warning issue or cancellation times do not necessarily match gate closure or reopening, so check actual road access.

Review weather and waves, life jackets, and advice against swimming alone or after drinking before entering the sea.
Respect villages, sacred sites and nature
Villages
Use designated parking and keep house entrances clear on narrow residential roads. Wear more than swimwear in villages and shops away from the beach, and take your rubbish with you.
Utaki sacred sites
Utaki remain places of prayer. Rules for entry and photography vary: follow signs, ropes and local guidance, and do not enter areas without permission.
Sea and nature
Do not stand on, kick or touch coral, or chase, touch or feed wildlife. Take what you brought back off the islands.
Frequently asked questions
Do Miyako Islands and Miyakojima mean the same thing?
No. The Miyako Islands are an eight-island region; Miyakojima is the largest single island. Miyakojima City covers six islands, while Tarama and Minna belong to Tarama Village.
Can I take a passenger ferry from Naha to Miyakojima?
There is no scheduled passenger ferry between Okinawa Main Island and Miyakojima. Usually you fly from Naha to Miyako Airport; Shimojishima Airport is another option depending on the operating day.
Can I drive around all eight Miyako Islands?
No. Direct bridges link Miyakojima to Ikema, Kurima and Irabu, and Shimoji is reached via Irabu. Ogami, Tarama and Minna have no road connection.
How should I choose between Miyako and Shimojishima airports?
Compare flight dates and times, your first and last destinations, buses or taxis to your hotel and rental-car collection locations. Shimojishima Airport is a separate airport on Shimoji Island, not another terminal of Miyako Airport.
Do I need a rental car on a first trip?
It is not essential, but useful for visiting several road-linked islands. Without a car, choose a base such as Hirara where transport is easier to arrange, and connect the airport, hotel and destinations with buses, taxis and transfers in advance.
Should my first trip be 3 days / 2 nights or 4 days / 3 nights?
Three days and two nights suit a trip focused on Miyakojima and about one bridge-linked area. Four days and three nights give you more full days to split the north, south and Irabu areas or switch plans with the weather.
