Wear a life jacket and avoid going alone
Wear a life jacket at sea, stay in a group of at least two, and keep children under constant supervision. Do not swim or enter the sea after drinking alcohol, when short of sleep or when tired.

Compare how much time an activity involves in the water, swimming requirements, weather and the time from meeting to finishing. Age, health, transfers and available languages depend on the individual plan. First narrow the options to activities suitable for everyone in your group, then arrange the booking and transport.

Check the forecast, wind and tides beforehand, and do not enter the sea in high waves or bad weather. SUP boards can be carried away by wind. Strong winds, lightning and high waves also require caution on the shore.
Report an accident at sea or request a marine rescue by calling 118 without an area code.
Do not chase or touch sea turtles, or feed marine life. Do not stand on coral or kick it with fins. During night observation, do not collect or damage plants or animals, and take your rubbish with you.
At Pumpkin Cave, do not touch stalactites or enter restricted areas. The surrounding area is a place of worship. The conservation and use agreement prohibits signatory operators from running trips that walk through the sea to the cave, and specifies using kayaks or SUP boards.
Compare snorkeling from a beach with a boat trip offshore to Yabiji. Along with any anxiety about the water, consider how much time you will spend on a boat.
SUP or canoeing and cave trips involve different activities after travelling over the water. Compare preparations for falling in, footing inside a cave, and start times that depend on the tide.
Night nature observation and land-based sightseeing are options. If sea conditions prevent marine activities, first check whether the weather allows travel, then consider crafts or indoor facilities.
Consider not only water depth and time in the sea but whether you can set aside a half or full day including travel in both directions. Durations below are examples from individual operators.
Introductory scuba diving and recreational dives for C-card holders have different participation requirements. Tell the operator your certification type, experience, time since your last dive and health status. If you want certification training, include the required number of days in your itinerary. Consult the operator about the required interval between diving and flying. Do not schedule a dive on your departure day.
Sea Sky Hakuai is a semi-submersible sightseeing boat with an underwater observation cabin. It is an option for people who do not choose swimming activities, but wind, waves or maintenance can suspend service. Do not treat it as an attraction guaranteed to operate in rain. Include travel to the boarding point in your itinerary.
Miyakojima City Experience Craft Village has pottery, weaving, dyeing and other workshops inside the tropical botanical garden. Book with each workshop directly. Along with duration, choose according to whether you can take the finished work home that day or need later collection or shipping.
Provide the children's ages and heights and the number of accompanying adults. Also consider whether riding along without participating is allowed, where a non-participating parent can wait, and access to breaks and toilets.
Rather than only saying you are a beginner, explain specific concerns about putting your face in the water or being unable to stand. Ask about equipment practice time, guide numbers and ways to rest during the activity.
Being able to book for one does not mean a trip will operate for only one participant. Read the minimum operating number, shared or private arrangements and extra charges in the plan. Do not act alone at sea.
Declare the information requested when applying, including existing conditions, medication, pregnancy, previous injuries or surgery. Ask the operator whether a medical certificate is needed and consult a doctor about health concerns. Do not judge eligibility by age alone.
Compare the language used for explanations, guide-to-participant numbers, equipment such as life jackets, insurance coverage and emergency contact methods. The prefectural police's published Maruyu list is one source for assessing safety arrangements; it does not guarantee an accident-free activity.
The shop, meeting point and activity site may be different places. Before booking, establish eligible hotels for transfers, notices of meeting-point changes, luggage, changing and shower arrangements, and transport after finishing. Without a car, secure the return journey too.
Packages such as cave exploration plus snorkeling change both the number of times you enter the water and the duration. Read whether photos, equipment, facility use and transfers are included in your selected option.
Ask the operator for the cancellation reason and alternatives. Wind, waves, lightning and tides can change conditions even in sunshine. Caves and boats are not indoor attractions for rainy days.
Operator cancellations and cancellations for your own reasons are treated differently. Read when you will be contacted, refund and rescheduling terms, and what happens if your flight is cancelled.
On a three-night, four-day trip, leave room to swap activities between full days. If a two-night, three-day trip has no alternative date, consider crafts or cultural facilities. During a typhoon or weather warning, do not assume you can travel even to an indoor attraction.
Check airports, buses, taxis and rental cars, along with bridge restrictions.
Use three- and four-day itineraries to plan the time around activities and a spare day.
Compare six accommodation areas by dining, shopping and airport access.
It depends on the activity and operator's conditions. Explain your concerns about water and your swimming experience, and discuss practice and assistance. The availability of a buoyancy aid alone does not establish that you can participate.
Age limits differ by plan. Choose a plan whose health requirements, correctly fitting equipment, parental-accompaniment rules and other conditions are met by everyone in your group.
Rain alone does not determine this. The operator considers wind, waves, lightning and tides and may change the meeting point or activity, or cancel it.
No. Sea turtles are wild animals, so encounters are not guaranteed. You may not find any; if you do, do not chase or touch them.
Avoid going alone at sea. Even if you travel solo, plan to join a guided activity and stay with other participants and the guide.
Maruyu designation is one piece of information for assessing safety measures, not a guarantee against accidents. Consider the day's sea conditions, participation requirements and the operator's explanation.
