South
A morning ferry, Yaeyama soba for lunch, then dinner in Misakicho. With the port close to town, this area gives you a base for island hopping and places to eat within walking distance.

Do not rely on 'meet at Ishigaki Port' alone: check the building, entrance and landmark in your booking instructions. Most of these five tours meet around the ferry terminal.
Northwest
Look out over the bay's small islands from Kabira Park, watch the underwater world from a glass-bottom boat, or head onto the water by SUP or kayak. Each gives you another view of Kabira Bay. At the Yonehara Yaeyama Palm Grove, walk beneath tall palms and look up into the canopy. Wear comfortable walking shoes for the many steps.

Swimming is not permitted in Kabira Bay. For an activity that involves swimming, choose a tour held elsewhere, such as around the Blue Cave.
Southeast
Seaside villages and mangroves at the mouth of the Miyara River. On the airport side of town, this area suits a stay with time to walk through villages and relax at your accommodation. When adding a sea or river activity, consider its location together with the hotels covered by its transfers.

The airport and ferry terminal are in different locations. If you book an activity meeting at the port soon after landing, allow time to collect your luggage and travel there.
North
Look along the narrow Hirakubo Peninsula from Tamatorizaki Observatory, then continue to Cape Hirakubozaki. Make a coastal drive of it, with the sea changing color along the way. Set aside a day for the north to leave time at the viewpoints, rather than rushing between Kabira and the island's northern tip.

Allow about 40 minutes by car from the ferry terminal to Tamatorizaki. If you stay in the north, plan dinner and the journey to the following morning's tour meeting point.

03 / Your Ishigaki trip
Walk Taketomi's village lanes or head to Iriomote's rivers and forests. Both are reached by boat from Ishigaki Port's ferry terminal. Decide what you want to do on the island before choosing your port and return ferry services.
A high-speed ferry takes about 10–15 minutes from Ishigaki Port. Head from the port to the village for stone walls and white-sand lanes. To combine a village walk with the coast, consider a bicycle or the island bus.
Build your day around canoeing along a river or walking in the forest. Iriomote has two ports, Uehara and Ohara; the one you need depends on your activity. To reach Yubu Island, travel across Iriomote, then cross by water buffalo cart.

For ferry trips or activities meeting in town, head from the airport toward the ferry terminal first. On days exploring Kabira or the north, use your outward and return transport plans to work out how much time you can spend there.

By bus, take the Yonehara Campground route or change at the bus terminal in town. Check both the outward and return services before deciding how long to spend in Kabira.
Fares and approximate journey times were checked on September 6, 2026. Check the timetable of the bus company you will use for your travel date.
After landing, you still need to leave the aircraft, collect your luggage, wait for a bus and check in at the port. Yaeyama Kanko Ferry recommends a ferry departure at least about 1½ hours after arrival if traveling by taxi, or about 2 hours after arrival by bus. Ferries do not wait for delayed flights, so leave a generous gap before the start of any activity booked soon after arrival.
Take a bus from the airport into town. A stay within walking distance of the ferry terminal lets you combine activities with transfers and a ferry trip to Taketomi. If you visit Kabira or the north independently, arrange your return bus or taxi too.
A day out to Tamatorizaki or Cape Hirakubozaki gives you time to enjoy a coastal drive. On ferry days to Taketomi or Iriomote, leave your car on Ishigaki and use other transport on the island you visit. Rental cars cannot be carried on the high-speed passenger ferries.

Choose your hotel together with dinner plans and the next morning's meeting point. Staying near the port, in Kabira, in Miyara or Shiraho, or in the north changes how you spend each day.

Walk to dinner in Misakicho, then set off by boat the next morning. Check the actual walking time from your accommodation to the port to make early meeting times easier to manage.

Tamatorizaki, Hirakubo & the north
A base for days around the Hirakubo Peninsula. Activities meeting in town require a longer journey. Choose accommodation with dinner or find a nearby place to eat in advance to reduce travel back and forth at night.

Yaeyama soba pairs thin noodles with finely sliced meat and fish cake. Stop for a bowl during a walk around town, then look for Ishigaki beef barbecue or island fish at dinner. On a night-tour day, finish eating before the meeting time or choose a restaurant whose hours suit your return.
For the Phantom Island and Taketomi combination, check your ferry connection and lunch break together. See whether meals are included in the tour price and budget for any that are not. Before a northern drive, check which days your planned places to eat are open.

Keep the first and last days light around your arrival and departure times. Set aside longer stretches on the middle days for sea activities and island hopping.
Stay in town for a first visit to Ishigaki
Spend your arrival and departure days in town, with the middle day for the sea. Choose the experience you most want to try at Kabira Bay or Phantom Island.

Head from the airport to your accommodation in town, leave your bags and explore around Euglena Mall. Have dinner in town. If you add a nighttime nature walk, leave plenty of time between your flight's arrival and the tour meeting time.

Spend the morning or afternoon on a Kabira Bay SUP or kayak tour, or a Phantom Island landing and snorkeling trip. Confirm the time from meeting to finish, then use the rest for changing clothes, eating and walking around town.

Have breakfast near your accommodation, shop or take a short walk, then head to the airport. Work out when to leave using the bus departure time, rental car return arrangements and your airline's check-in deadline.
For a day walking around Taketomi too
Keep your sea activity and Taketomi visit on separate days. If you combine them in the Phantom Island + Taketomi package, use the free middle day for a drive around Kabira and the north, or to move activities if the weather changes.
Day 1
Travel from the airport to your accommodation. Have a look around the port and enjoy dinner in town. Even with a transfer included, check your booking instructions to make sure your accommodation is within the service area.
Day 2
Join the Blue Cave exploration and snorkeling tour. Allow time for meals and rest before and after swimming, then spend the evening in town. If sea conditions require a change, discuss the schedule with the operator.

Take a ferry from Ishigaki Port to Taketomi, then use the island bus or a bicycle to explore the village and shoreline. Keep your return ferry in mind as you go. If you choose Iriomote instead, plan the day around the correct meeting port and activity time.
Day 4
Have breakfast or do some shopping before heading home. Keep island hopping to the middle days: a delayed or canceled ferry on your final day could affect your flight.
Another option: combine sea activities and Taketomi in one day.

Wind and waves can change sea activities even on a sunny day. Put the experience you most want to try on a middle day, and check messages from the operator from the day before.
Warm days alternate with cooler ones. Bring a layer to put on after getting wet during sea activities, and add an indoor option for the early-summer rainy season.
A season for sea activities and walks on nearby islands. Carry a hat and drinks, and break up long walks on Taketomi or around viewpoints. If a typhoon approaches, check announcements from ferry companies, airlines and tour operators.
Weather remains changeable in autumn; in winter, northerly winds bring spells of cloud and light rain. Check the operator's guidance for sea activities rather than deciding on temperature alone. Mix in drives, meals and indoor visits.
Walk through the cave past fossils from its time beneath the sea and limestone formations that have grown over many years. Ishigaki Island Limestone Cave is about 8 minutes by car from town. It opens 9:00–18:30, with last entry at 18:00. Admission is ¥1,200 for adults and ¥600 for children from age 4 through junior high school.
Check whether the cave is open during a typhoon. There are other caves nearby, so search for 'Ishigaki Island Limestone Cave' on your map.
08 / Your Ishigaki trip
With a base in town or near the ferry terminal, you can walk to restaurants, take ferries to other islands and join activities whose transfers cover your accommodation. For independent visits to Kabira or the north, check bus times in both directions or arrange taxis. 'Hotel transfers included' does not necessarily cover the whole island.
Swimming is not permitted in Kabira Bay. Enjoy the view from the lookout, take a glass-bottom boat, or join an operator-led SUP or kayak tour. The Blue Cave and Phantom Island snorkeling tours listed here take place separately from Kabira Bay.
The five tours have different age limits and participation conditions. At Kabira Bay, even SUP and kayaking have different conditions, including maximum ages, while the listed Blue Cave tour does not accept non-swimmers. For nature without entering the water, consider the nighttime walk. Before booking, check the product page for children's ages, swimming ability and health requirements.
Transfer areas vary by tour; airport pickups and hotels in the north are not necessarily included. If your accommodation is outside the area listed in your booking instructions, make your own way to the specified meeting point. Many of the tours listed here meet around Ishigaki Port's ferry terminal.
Bring swimwear, a towel, a change of clothes and drinks, and check which footwear and equipment your chosen tour includes. If you continue to Taketomi by ferry, allow time to change so you do not board in wet clothes. Ask the operator where you can store large bags and use a shower.
Rain alone does not necessarily determine cancellation; the operator considers wind, waves, lightning and other conditions. Check messages the day before and on the day, as the meeting point or activity location may change. Refund terms may differ between canceling yourself because of the weather and the operator canceling the tour.
You explore Taketomi independently. After returning from Phantom Island to Ishigaki Port, you change to a ferry bound for Taketomi. The tour includes return Taketomi ferry tickets, but check what your chosen plan includes before arranging transport and additional activities on the island.
