See Okinawa from the water on Kadena's Hija River

Hija River Mangrove Kayaking | A Nature Trip to Add to Your Day in Chatan

Look closely at mangrove roots and search for small crabs along the bank. Kayaking on the Hija River gives you time to watch riverside life as you paddle. Add around 2 hours in nature to a day exploring Chatan's streets.

Follow the roots and watch for movement along the bank

A closer look at life along the river

From a kayak, the water's edge comes into view at close range. Your guide points out how mangroves grow and the small creatures living along the riverbank—details you might walk past on land.

  1. Begin with the paddle

Start with an explanation of paddle techniques and safety. First-time kayakers can try turning and stopping before heading onto the river. This is a seated paddle along the surface rather than a swimming trip.

  2. Watch the riverbank

Your guide introduces the plants and small creatures along the way. Photo support is included, leaving you free to focus on paddling and the riverside views. Wildlife sightings depend on the day's conditions.

Allow 2 hours, with about 1 hour of kayaking

Travel to and from the meeting point is outside these 2 hours. If you are combining the tour with lunch or shopping in Chatan, allow time for both journeys and changing clothes.

Borrow the equipment; wear clothes that can get wet

  1. Equipment provided

Kayaking equipment, a life jacket, a guide and photo support are included. There is no need to bring your own kayak or paddle.

  2. What to bring

Bring a change of clothes, a towel and drinking water, and wear sandals and clothes that let you move and can get wet. Swimwear is not essential, but prepare for drips from the paddle and other splashes.

  3. Joining with children

The listed age range is 2–84. When bringing young children, give their ages and your group size and check seating arrangements and equipment when booking. Discuss any concerns about maintaining a seated position or other needs beforehand, even if everyone is within the age range.

Meet at Kadena Fishing Port—and check the street number

The meeting address is 566-7 Mizugama, Kadena, Nakagami District, Okinawa. Make your own way to Kadena Fishing Port, following the instructions from the operator, Umiusagi / Umiashibi.

Several operators run tours on the Hija River. Match the operator name and street number in your confirmation instead of searching the map for 'mangroves' alone. Hotel transfers are not included, so arrange your return journey in advance too.

Before you book

Can I join if I have never kayaked before?

You receive an explanation of paddling and safety before going onto the river. Tell your guide about anything you are unsure of before setting off. Life jackets are worn on the river.

Will I paddle for the full 2 hours?

Kayaking on the river takes about 1 hour. The total of around 2 hours also includes check-in, equipment preparation and the safety briefing.

Will my clothes get wet?

Prepare to get wet: wear clothes you can move in and sandals, and bring a change of clothes and a towel. Avoid joining barefoot or in boots. Bring drinking water too.

Can I join in the rain or when a sea tour has been cancelled?

A river tour also depends on the weather and conditions on the day. A cancelled sea tour does not mean this tour will necessarily run. Check available places and operating conditions with the kayak operator.

Is guiding available in English?

GetYourGuide lists Japanese and English guides. Select your preferred language when booking and check that it is available for your chosen session.
